The
largest component of service provided by the fire department is
EMS delivery. Ambulance service to the City of Oconto, Town of Oconto, Town
of Pensaukee and portions of the Town of Little River consisted of 83% of
all of the department’s calls in 2007.
Having a fulltime staff of two Firefighter/EMTs 24 hours per day usually allows for a faster response than would be provided by EMTs responding from home or work. This has resulted in many success stories including full resuscitation and recovery of patients who otherwise would not have made it.
An Expansion of Service
The fire department recently underwent an expansion of the EMS service it is able to provide to the citizens of Oconto and it’s surrounding townships. Nearly all EMT members of the department voluntarily agreed to undergo more training in order to provide better, more advanced patient care. Effective June 7th, 2007, the department began EMT-Intermediate Technician service. This allows EMTs to provide IV therapy and slightly expands the array of drugs administered. This transition would not have been possible without the support of its Medical Director, the Police and Fire Commission, Mayor, Administrator, and Alderpersons who understand the need to provide the highest quality of emergency services to the Oconto area.
